Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Page 8 of 8 December 22, 1961 Mr. Cloud Wampler Chairman of the Board Carrier Corporation Syracuse, New York Dear Mr. Wampler: I have your letter of December 14th regarding the letter from Mr. Nixon for your scrapbook. I have checked on this and find that Dick did send a letter some time ago, but I have asked his office to send you another copy since it apparently was mislaid some- where. If there is anything further you need, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am sorry that we had this problem. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman December 22, 1961 Mr. John Clifford Folger 725 Fifteenth Street, N.W. Washington 5, D. C. Dear Cliff: In cleaning up the loose ends which were hanging around when I started on this job, I find that there are two polls which were taken in September which have not been paid for as yet. It is my understanding that you are familiar with these polls and that they were taken prior to Dick's decision to run to determine the relative standing of the potential candidates. It is also my understanding that you had agreed to pay for these polls and that they should therefore not be submitted to the local Committee. Assuming this is correct, I am attaching the invoices which total $7,894.50. Payment should be made directly to C-E-I-R, Inc. If there is any problem on this, please let me know. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman enclosures December 22, 1961 Mr. Fred Weigel P.S. Sammons, Jr. 420 Lexington Avenue New York, New York Dear Frank: Thanks very much for writing on December 5th. I am not really sure that I have succeeded in getting another leave without cutting the tie-line. Each time I try this, the reception is a little less enthusiastic, but I trust I'll be back at the old store in December of next year. I am glad to hear the new business is going well and am sure it will continue to poosper. You probably see Mary Ripley more often than I do, but Jo does serve on a Board with her out here, so sees her from time to time. Very best to you and Katy and the clan. I'll give you a shout if I ever manage to get to New York again. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman December 22, 1961 Mr. W. F. Lippincott 1736 South Sepulveda Boulevard Los Angeles 25, California Dear Dr. Lippincott: Jo tells se that in her last visit with you, you indicated an interest in the Ninen campaign and a willingness to be of help. I wonder if this interest would extend to some organizational activity among other veterinarians? We would like to form a "Veterinarians for Nimon" committee and I thought you might be able to be of help is getting this under way. Another area in which your assistance might be extremely valuable would be in giving us some guidance in what the failings of the present administration in California might be in the field of veterinary medicine, and any thoughts you might have on a constructive program for a new Republican government in this field. I don't want to load you with work, but we need the help of everyone we can get, so I did not want your offer to go unheeded. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldoman Sig. December 22, 1961 Senator John N. Hughes, Chairman Republican County Committee of Onondaga 509 Lincoln Bank Building Syracuse 2, New York Dear John: Thank you very much for the check covering reim- bursement of expenses for Mr. Nimon and myself in connection with the Syracuse Dinner. I was, of course, very pleased to hear that you wished to make a contribution to Mr. Nixon's campaign fund and can assure you that ell such help is extremely welcome, especially at this stage in the campaign. I would suggest that you draw your check to "Nixon for Governor" and send it to me in an envelope marked personal at 3908 Wilshire Bouleverd, Los Angeles 5, California. Dick still talks frequantly about the Syracuse Dinner which he considers the epitome of efficiency and effectiveness for such affairs. No keeps telling the people here that they ought to go to Syracuse and learn how these things can be done. Very best personal regards. Sincerely, H. R. Daway Republican State Central Committee 525 Market Street San Francisco, California Dear Jean: Your letter of December 12th was received too late for us to supply the letter of greetings from Mr. Minon to the Team Age Republicans. Sorry it happened this way. You know, of course, he likes to fulfill such requests. In the future, it would be very helpful if you would include a suggested draft of the type letter desired. This would expedite it, and would be very much appreciated. Sorry we missed connections this time. Best regards. Sincerely, M. R. Haldeman C Fac. December 22, 1961 Mr. Don Searle 117 North Glenroy Avenue Los Angeles 49, California Dear Don: I gave Dick your message regarding Fred Seaton's reaction to his tape, and he was glad to hear it was successful. It looks to se as if you planned your trip around the world at precisely the right time to miss most of the Gubernaterial Campaign activity. Your offer to supply tape recordings would be most welcome at a later point in the campaign, but unfortunately I don't think we can take advantage of it before you head for the hills in January. We de very much appreciate your generous offer and maybe we can take you up on it when you get back in September. In the meantime, have a good trip. Sincerely, H. R. The letter did have to follow a rather devieus route before it reached him, and then be held up replying until proper procedures were set up for handling out of state donations. Your offer to contribute $1,000 to the California campaign is very much appreciated by Mr. Mixon. As you know from past experience, your presumption that money is harder to get during the primary is certainly correct. May I suggest that you make your check payable to "Wixon for Governor" and send it to me, marked personal, at 3908 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 5, California. Best regards. Sincerely, M. R. I understand that your members have a number of thoughts regarding action or inaction on the part of the Governor of California over the years, and I would be very much interested in learning from you what you feel has been neglected or mishandled in the past, and also what positive steps you feel would be advisable for the future. If you are going to be in the Southern California area in the near future, perhaps we might be able to get together to discuss this. If this is not possible, I would suggest that you meet with one of our Northern California people and would be glad to set this up at your convenience. would you be so kind as to give me an indication of your current plans and any thoughts you wish to express at this point. Mesa Drive, Orange, C lif.) suggests that the appearance in Kern County before the Primary should be a "Barbecue" put on by several local people, and inviting the general public free or for a very nominal amount, giving R. N. the opportunity to get directly to the people rather than the big oil group. This should be seriously considered in planning for Kern County appearances. December 7, 1961 Mr. Joseph T. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 7, 1961 MEMORANDUM TO: STRATEGY COMMITTEE FROM: BOB HALDEMAN SUBJECT: CALIFORNIA PETROLEUM MARKETERS COUNCIL I talked to Charles Morley, Executive Secretary of the California Petroleum Marketers Council, at HO-3-0595 on December 5. Mcrley says that this Council is a Trade Association of petroleum wholesalers and distributors. They have not previously engaged in any political activity, but do intend to be active this year to the extent of endorsing and contributing to selected candidates. The major oil companies are not members of this Council but their distributors, in many cases, are. Richfield and Standard, for instance, have a number of distributors who belong. Superior oil does not. The group represents 10,000 retail units in California out of a total of 26,000. They say they are friendly with the others. There are two associations of retail units: The California Federation of Service Stations and the International Service Station Association. Both of them advocate state control of the industry and both are quite unpopular representing together less than 1% of the retailers. Morley says he would like to work with our staff and make available the facilities of their public relations firm. He says it is his firm conviction that his group will endorse Nixon for Governor. He advises that the number of the "Serve-Yourself" station operators have met and their Executive Secretary tells him they are going to support Shell. December 7. 1961 MEMORANDUM TO: SCHEDULE COMMITTEE FROM: BOB HALDEMAN SUBJECT: CALIFORNIA PETROLEUM MARKETERS COUNCIL The California Petroleum Marketers Council would like to have Richard Nixon address their annual meeting in Fresno on Saturday, February 24, at Luncheon. There will be approximately 700 oil men present including management members of the oil companies. This group is a Trade Association of petroleum wholesalers who intend to be active politically in the forthcoming election. This decision should be held up pending a review of this organization by the Strategy Committee. The contact is Mr. Charles Morley, Executive Secretary, at HO-3-0595. His home address is 15717 Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades, Calif. Phone: GL-4-2723. His wife is also anxious to be of assistance. He gave Pete Flanigan this information on December 5. December 6, 1961 Mr. Richard St. Johns O'Melveny & Myers 433 South Spring Los Angeles, California Dear Dick: I would naturally like to postpone setting firm dates for autographing appearances in the four California cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and Whittier) as long as possible. I would appreciate it if you would let me know when these dates will have to be confirmed and also - as soon as you can - give me a tentative idea of approximately what datew you and McCormick would like to have. We would, of course, want to schedule San Francisco and Sacramento at times when he is in the area 50 as to avoid skipping back and forth around the State. Let me know what you have in mind and we'll try to work it out. Very best personal regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 6, 1961 Mr. Murray M. Chotiner 600 Fox Wilshire Theatre Building 202 South Hamilton Drive Beverly Hills, California Dear Murray: I would like to get a reading from you on Jim Wilbur and will plan to discuss this with you when we next meet. He has sent me a resume and I met him very briefly in Santa Maria last weekend but would like your evaluation of him. See you soon. Very truly yours, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 6, 1961 Mr. Philip L. Boyd White Park Building Ninth and Market Streets Riverside, California Dear Phil: First, let me correct my home address for you, since the Robert Haldeman to whom you addressed your letter is another individual who also lives in the Pacific Palisades and who is at present, as you can imagine, receiving a great deal of my mail. My home address is 550 Spoleto Drive, Santa Monica, Calif. We did, indeed, enjoy an unusual evening at the Jonathan Club and I certainly appreciated John's making possible our chatting again after many years. I certainly understand your reasoning regarding the timing of Bill Knowland's help and am very much aware of the situation regarding the "Right to Work" issue. We, of course, recognise some potential problems with the forthcoming book, as you outline, but I think it will also have some counterbalancing advantages in the California Campaign. Some of these would include the reaffirmation of Dick's position and long record of leadership in the fight against Communism; the detailed clarification of the 1952 Fund Case -- which should help to counter- act some of the current phony smears --1 and a number of details regarding the 1960 Campaign which are pertinent in the forthcoming California election. In any event, the commitments and contracts on this book were made prior to Dick's declaration for Governor and, in view of this and the amount of money involved, it would seem at this point to be unwise to hold it up. 2. Mr. Philip L. Boyd December 6, 1961 As you suggest, however, Dick will be developing a series of articles and statements on the State of California's growth opportunities during the '60's which will outline his interest and programs on the issues you itemized. I certainly understand your position in regard to Knight but I hope that it will not preclude our drawing on you for some advice and counsel behind the scenes. I completely agree with you that Brown will increase in strength between now and the election and that we must operate on the basis of leaving no stone unturned. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness in writing. I hope we will have an opportunity in the months ahead to discuss some of these things in detail. I would especially like to ask you for some help on the educational program when we get into some of the details in that area. In the meantime, best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 6, 1961 Mr. Thomas E. Ross Ross Associates 870 Market Street San Francisco 2, California Dear Mr. Ross: Thank you very much for your letter of December 1 regarding the possibility of your participation in the forthcoming Campaign. As 1 am sure you realise, I had written you in November in order to determine your present status as a result of your communication to Mr. Nixon's office earlier this year. Your assumption that we are looking for experienced campaigners to devote their entire energies to the forthcoming battle is correct, and that is what I had in mind in writing you. I certainly understand your situation with regard to present commitments which limit your availability in the coming year. For your information, we do not plan to retain a political manage- ment firm for this Campaign and, of course, Whitaker & Banter would not be available to us in any event because of their assignment on the Christopher Campaign. We do plan to retain as advertising agency in Northern California to work on a cooperative basis with our agency in Southern California. Since the Southern agency has not yet been selected, it would be too early to discuss plans for the North. I appreciate your interest and, at the proper time, we will be in touch if it appears that something might be worked out on the basis that you outline. Thank you very much again for writing and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 6, 1961 The Honorable John G. Tower United States Senate Washington 25, D. C. In the meantime, very best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb December 5, 1961 The Honorable Mark O. Hatfield Governor of Oregon Salem, Oregon Dear Mark: I'm sorry it didn't work out for me to accompany Dick on his recent trip to Portland, but I understand that all went well. I was looking forward to the pleasure of seeing you and Travis, but I guess that will have to wait for another time. As you can deduce from the letterhead, we are back in the old business again, although at a slightly different stand. At the moment, we are up to our ears in the early stages of organisation, and are very much aware that we have a rough fight ahead of us, but 1 am sure we will win it. Haldeman HRH/jb December 5, 1961 MEMORANDUM TO: BOB HALDEMAN FROM: CHARLIE FARRINGTON SUBJECT: WIN PROGRAM In discussing the Win Program at lunch today with Jack Harriman and Norton Norris, it was agreed that it would be most helpful to have a run-down on the basic requirements of this type of an activity from Senator Hiram Fong. Although his thinking might not be entirely applicable to the California situation, a general briefing on the approach which should be taken and the main objectives to be seught would probably give us something more concrete from which to work in the development of our evn plans in this area. Would it be possible, therefore, for you, or someone, to contact Senator Fong with this request at the earliest opportunity December 5, 1961 Mr. John F.
