CALIFORNIA 90602\nMay 20, 1969\nDear Rose Mary:\nLouise received a letter from her aunt, Mrs. Fleming, a retired\ncollege professor, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and since the\nletter refers to a subject in which there might be some interest,\nI am taking the liberty of quoting from it and sending it to\nyou for your information.\nLouise's aunt is a close friend of former Governor Edwin Mechem\nand his family of New Mexico. The comments from her letter are\nquoted without interpretation:\n\"Hubert, I am concerned by a number of comments that are\ngoing around, and apparently ballooning, about Edwin\nMechem, so successfully managing the state campaign for\nNixon and never having a word of appreciation from him.\nThe week after election, Dorothy (Mechem's wife) told\nme that as soon as they reached Albuquerque the queries\nto Edwin were, \"What did you get out of it?' His reply\nwas that he got what he wanted - Humphrey defeated. But\nlater I heard that he was asked if thanks was all he got\nand that he didn't get any of those - he didn't hear from\nNixon either before or after the election.\"\nWhether the above is correct or not I don't know but I thought\nthat I should write you so the right people could see whether\nthere is any action necessary.\nSincerely,\nVisit\nMiss Rose Mary Woods\nExecutive Secretary to the President\nThe White House\nWashington, D.
