Dear Rose Mary:
Louise received a letter from her aunt, Mrs. Fleming, a retired
college professor, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and since the
letter refers to a subject in which there might be some interest,
I am taking the liberty of quoting from it and sending it to
you for your information.
Louise's aunt is a close friend of former Governor Edwin Mechem
and his family of New Mexico. The comments from her letter are
quoted without interpretation:
"Hubert, I am concerned by a number of comments that are
going around, and apparently ballooning, about Edwin
Mechem, so successfully managing the state campaign for
Nixon and never having a word of appreciation from him.
The week after election, Dorothy (Mechem's wife) told
me that as soon as they reached Albuquerque the queries
to Edwin were, "What did you get out of it?' His reply
was that he got what he wanted - Humphrey defeated. But
later I heard that he was asked if thanks was all he got
and that he didn't get any of those - he didn't hear from
Nixon either before or after the election."
Whether the above is correct or not I don't know but I thought
that I should write you so the right people could see whether
there is any action necessary.
Sincerely,
Visit
Miss Rose Mary Woods
