THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON PRESENTATION OF THE PRESIDENT'S NATIONAL MEDALS OF SCIENCE Wednesday - October 10, 1973 11:30 A. M. The East Room T. From: Tom Hart BACKGROUND: The National Medal of Science was established in 1959 by the 86th Congress (P. L. 86-209). It is presented to individuals who, in the judgment of the President, "are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstand- ing contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, or engineering sciences. 11 You approved in August Secretary Shultz's recom- mendations for the eleven recipients (list of recipients and reason for selection attached at TAB A). A presentation ceremony has been scheduled for the East Room that will be attended by approximately 300 people, including families of the recipients, members of Congress, selected Administration officials, and other science- related groups and committees. Your personal participation in this ceremony is intended to identify your personal interest in scientific achievement and reflect the importance you place in your national program for science. SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: 11:25 a. m. You and Mrs. Nixon will be introduced by Dr. Stever to the eleven recipients and their wives who will be gathered in the Blue Room. 11:30 a.m. The recipients and their wives will be escorted to the East Room. The wives, accompanied by Mrs. Stever, will be ushered to their seats and the recipients will be seated together on the front row. Dr. Stever will take his position at the rear of the platform that will be located along the center of the east wall of the East Room.
