BACKGROUND:
The National Medal of Science was established in 1959 by the 86th Congress

President, "are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstand-
ing contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, or
engineering sciences. 11 You approved in August Secretary Shultz's recom-
mendations for the eleven recipients (list of recipients and reason for selection
attached at TAB A).
A presentation ceremony has been scheduled for the East Room that will be
attended by approximately 300 people, including families of the recipients,
members of Congress, selected Administration officials, and other science-
related groups and committees. Your personal participation in this ceremony
is intended to identify your personal interest in scientific achievement and
reflect the importance you place in your national program for science.
