NEWS SUMMARY
November 30, 1972
(Wed nets, wires, columns)
The major stories of the day:
- For 3rd nite in a row RN's 2nd term staffing led all nets
w/ appointment of the "leader of the hardhats" (CBS)
Peter Brennan, featured. Film on all shows of '70 NYC
demonstration by laborers backing RN's VN policy w/note
made that it was then that Brennan came to WH attention.
And all nets followed w/clips from Brennan's Wed. conf-
erence as he emphasized he wasn't chosen as a political
payoff and promised to work on job discrimination faced
by minorities and women. he said he's not God and doesn't
have a magic wand but he wants to help the nation.
Sevareid less than enthused w/the choice, in light of the
major contracts which are up in '73.

#2 story on all nets w/silent film of RN-Duc meeting and
reports that Pres. is seeking to avoid summit w/Thieu.
Rather said meeting w/Duc granted in lieu of summit
Smith said RN probably told Thieu's man that US has done
about all it can SVN can hold on for next 2 years w/what
it has and that may well be long enough to greatly improve
the situation.
Chancellor speculates Duc may have been
told in "very clear terms¹¹ that US will accept terms despite
SVN complaints
Valeriani, noting GI level announcement
is due from RN by Fri, said word is RN will keep current
29, 000 GIs in VN as residual force, in effect, til agreement
signing.
Noted by all nets was Father Phil Berrigan's parole after
4 1/2 years of 6 year sentence.
ABC told of sweeping new Admin plans to combat hijacks
and NBC, noting the anticipated plans, focused on anger
and concern of pilots and crews that not enough is being
done.
NBC focused on discontent at Mayors Conference over
withholding of Federal Redevelopment Funds, but w/
Davis pointing out Conf. host-city Indianapolis - - headed
by GOP Mayor Lugar, a close RN friend and campaigner
hasn't had any such problems.
