ENERGY
On brief CBS AM film Meany said he's been trying to find out
how seriously crisis will effect labor but he gets different estimates
from Exec branch. If Schulz is correct that US will be only 8% short,
we can make that up, w/out a cost of jobs. But, said Meany, trouble
w/ this Admin is you don't get the facts
Inquirer's Meyer
says officials are having to temper early optimism about voluntary
conservation as new stix on gas demand for 1st week in Dec. have
"all but wiped out the 15% drop hailed by RN. 11 Stix show demand
swung sharply upward to just 1% below forecast. FEO wouldn't
comment except to note cumulative numbers are more meaningful
than week-by-week stix. "I'd obviously feel better if it were down
15% a 2nd week, but trends are reasonably positive, 11 official said.
In 2nd of daily reports on energy, Today had 4 film clips on
alternative sources: 1) Illinois where 25% of power needs come from
nuke energy (as opposed to 5% for US as whole). Utility spokesman
called it a great alternative source -- both economically and
technically sound. Not so, said environmentalist Comey who thinks
it'll be viable only when environmental problems are solved.
Reporter noted no one says nuke energy's the total answer but it
could become core of a self-sufficient US system. 2) From Texas
came report on harder look being given coal gasification. Tho it's
not new - W. Germany's done it since '30s -- it's also not cheap.
And coal gasification plants are only in the drawing board stage.
3) )Israel's already using solar energy to heat water for domestic
use. And scientists believe that w/ vast Israeli resources of salt-
water -- including Dead Sea -- solar energy can be used to produce
enough electricity for all Israeli domestic consumption
4) Calif.
geothermal plant w/ note that Natl Science Foundation's predicted
up to 40% of US energy needs could be supplied by '85 from this source.
