(Monday nets, wires)
The major stories of the day:
-- Food prices was top story on all nets, w/ABC/CBS leading
w/reports across US as 2nd day of meat boycott was underway
(it really got rolling said Cronkite) and farmers' wives held
counter-demonstrations and NBC w/Shultz before House Banking
on controls.
Nets generally agreed meat sales were down in
markets, but NBC report pointed out boycott hasn't affected
fast food chains (in Atlanta, at least) and NYC deli was doing
booming business in hot pastrami.
CBS's 4-person shopping
crew returned after March 1 purchases to find cost of food up in
3, down in 1.
All nets w/films of farmers' wives marching in
Sioux City, w/spokeswoman Popken saying farmers need, deserve
and expect a profit. CBS had film of counter-boycott in Minn/Ft.
Dodge where reporter said their message was not to criticize
farmers when all other costs have gone up more in last 20 years.
NBC's Dancy said farmers were "bitter" at being singled out
for causing problems, as he noted it was "obvious" they were holding
back supply as stockyards were virtually empty.
ABC said WH "made it clear" RN wasn't taking part in oycott, since
menu for Thieu dinner was roast prime beef tenderloin. Noting
menu, NBC said it was "protocol over prices. 11 CBS said the
boycott did not extend to WWH.
-- "Coincidental w/boycott, " said ABC, top Admin economic advisers
were on Hill to urge MCs to reject legis. expanding controls
NBC led w/film of Shultz noting prices have risen fast and
housewives have reacted by "blowing the whistle. " They were
also partly responsible, tho, because they were willing to pay the
higher prices, he added
On ABC film Shultz said housewives'
action will play a strategic part in what happens, but fundamental
is law of supply and demand. Admin's supply-oriented actions and
ceiling will get US on track.
Levine said Shultz' belief controls
aren't needed doesn't convince some MCs, and it seems it doesn't
convince housewives either.
CBS briefly noted Admin testimony.
ABC/CBS noted Shultz thinks RN would veto any bill expanding
controls.
ABC/CBS noted Senate narrowly rejected by 39-37
