The major stories of the day:
Colson's sentence of 1-3 years (and $5000 fine) led all nets
w/all noting sentence was the toughest meted out since breakin
trial. Important attention also given to CC's becoming 1st
former WH aide to say he broke law because RN told him to.
All nets noted CC said RN urged him "on numerous occasions
to disseminate damaging info about Ellsberg, 11 his atty and
other associates. NBC alone noted CC added that he was
convinced RN "believed he was acting in the natl interest. "
ABC said CC "confirmed speculation" he'd testify against RN.
All nets noted Warren "grimly" (CBS) declined all comment on
Colson's sentencing but VP on ABC emphasized importance of
differentiating between what RN actually told CC and what CC
told Gesell: "there's a big difference between telling CC to
smear and actually ordering a break-in. VP recalled Krogh
never implicated RN in breakin. All nets noted Clawson said
Colson's being sent to prison "for committing the same felony
that's been standard practice of members and staff of Ervin
Comm for more than a year and the same felony being committed
by some partisan Judiciary MCs. 11
NBC's Stern said if Colson's charges are true, they implicate
RN as a "principal" in Ellsberg breakin case and are a "serious
new worry¹ for RN's defenders. Kiker said Colson's statement
was a "big surprise" and a "great shock¹¹ at WH, be the most
damaging to RN since Dean's testimony. Sevareid commentary
said WH must regard possibility of what Colson may or may not
say as "a loose cannon on a rolling deck. 11
#2 or #3 reports on all nets was Judiciary wind-up of staff
presentment. Next on agenda is the question of witnesses and
Rodino's already agreed to call Colson, according to CBS.
ABC/NBC noted the interest in calling CC w/ABC noting MCs
"reacted w/caution¹ to Colson's statements on RN, mainly dodging
the question whether RN had been directly linked w/a crime.
W/tax presentment, as w/whole presentment nets' sampling of
Judiciary MC comments emphasized disagreement and uncertainty
of Comm.
