Buckley said private foundation support for "Firing Line" has
been w/drawn and it'll be offered on syndicated basis to public TV
stations til May 18 and after that to commercial stations in cities where
public stations haven't contracted for it. He believes program belongs
on public TV "where it has advantage of uninterrupted communication"
and said it benefits "substantially" from PBS network.
Stuart Loory is expected to be named as the 1st Kiplinger prof of
public affairs reporting at Ohio State.
CRIME-RELATED
Judge Byrne scolded govt severely (w/ sarcasm, said NBC) for
/ holding Pent Papers material and said, "Burden of govt can't
weigh w/ rights of defendants [which are] superior and must prevail"
over burden claimed by gov't that it's hard to get them altogether.
NBC's Bourgholtzer said the very cool Byrne turns icy when angry and
he is losing patience w/ gov't.
Jerry Wilson said RN wants more local money involved in fighting
crime. "The notion fedl money is going to be ultimate answer to
street crime is out of the question, 11 he said.
CBS film of James Earl Ray in lst/TV interview as he has asked
for release from solitary confinement. Officials say he's there because
he's a high escape risk and can't expect ordinary treatment as long as
he's known as the killer of ML King.
POLITICS
After more than 2 weeks of suspense, Rocky finally said he'd
support Marchi as GOP candidate for NYC Mayor. However, UPI notes,
Rocky didn't go much beyond a brief announcement.
AP leads: "New high-powered, reform-model House leadership
machine is sputtering along like old model, it was supposed to replace. "
Albert's learned it takes more than new rules to make House function
smoothly, and AP says, faced by determined RN and united GOP opposition,
he's been unable to weld Dems into anything resembling majority party.
Setbacks on not getting vote on price rollbacks and public jobs bill were
caused by defection of Southern Dems, who AP notes supposedly had lost
