The major stories of the day:
"Acting like old buddies, 11 CBS led off, RN/Brezhnev toasted
improved relations w/champagne and agreements. "A cathedral
of cooperation, 11 Kalb called accords, but no one yet knows how
firm the foundation is. Also lead film on NBC/ABC w/focus on
all nets on the State Dept. signing of "4 more symbols of detente --
theme for week and perhaps of year" (CBS). "Good spirits, "
(NBC) all "light, bubbly and buoyant" (CBS). All nets w/clip
as Brezhnev 1st dropped napkin as he jokingly tried to drink
"privately" and w/RN saying that Brezhnev was best politician
in the room. Jarriel called it "quite a compliment" considering
Brezhnev's desire to impress public/Senate. The MCs liked the
antics, said Kalb, recognizing one of their own.
All nets w/film
from Blair House luncheon for senators w/Brezhnev reported by
NBC to have answered all critical questions but any commitment
from Hill re: trade was not reported. Scott/Mansfield in brief
ABC clip said they hope it goes thru, however.
Javits on
NBC/CBS film said Brezhnev faced emigration questions w/dignity
and severely but Jack's "not satisfied" and said Hill must dowhat
it must do to deal w/problem not yet resolved.
NBC w/film
of state dinner and ABC w/film also on Today of RN expressing
confidence in successful summit. ABC/CBS noted RN/Brezhnev
on Sequoia Tues. nite.
In #2 CBS story, Rather recalled how JDE, when he was still
"operative" at WH, referred to $9B in Trojan horse bills. 4 of
those bills were signed, said Dan and Mudd said one of DC's
longest-running battles -- over spending -- abated just a bit.
ABC/NBC briefly noted signings.
Cox moved to protect case against Dean, reported all nets, as
Sirica ordered all evidence on the ex-counsel sealed and dated SO
it can be shown it was gained before Dean's Hill testimony which
he'll be giving under immunity.
NBC gave parts of staff
summary on Dean which told of RN desire to have/ Oct. probe
by House derailed and of RN's reported ok of exec. clemency
offer to Hunt. CBS noted latter and emphasized it was based on
hearsay and Dean is w/out documentation of it.
