THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN DEB NEWS SUMMARY June 22, 1973 (Thurs. nets, wires, columns) The major stories of the day: To applause and laughter on all nets, RN/Brezhnev sign the week's 2 most impt. agreements: 1) Commitment to reach offensive nuclear weapons agreement by end of '74 (called "probable centerpiece" of summit by NBC) and 2) Sharing of nuclear power research for peaceful purposes. (#2 on CBS, #3 on both ABC/NBC.) The 2 leaders "hammed it up" in "jovial" mood, said Valeriani on NBC. It was all serious business, said Rather, but neither man was afraid to be seen being humorous. NBC noted RN's effort to sign at precisely same time as Brezhnev -- thereby, joking about equality, UPI observes -- and the Soviet leader's reaction as the 2 men continued "clowning, 11 brought laughter and applause, said NBC. Jarriel said on ABC the "good-natured kidding" has become a trademark "of their carefully controlled appearances. 11 NBC noted speculation over accord to hold annual summits for next 3 years. ABC said there may be formalization of long-term relations and future summit plans. ABC said Soviet civilian airline route and trade accords are expected w/a major pact Fri. CBS noted HAK hinted a major surprise before Brezhnev leaves and there may be suspension of underground tests after he leaves. W/an attack on hard CO re pornography, the Court seemed "to signal the end of the permissive era, 11 led CBS. Chancellor said it's a "new era" w/Court decision reversing High Bench decisions going back to Ulysses in 133. Also lead story on ABC where Smith saw Court reversing the "increasingly permissive" outpouring of films, publications, etc. ABC's Geer sees a "single nationwide impact" -- "stem the increasing flood of porno. 11 In NBC's #2 story, Chancellor said indications in some cases were of clearly conservative Court. Brinkley sees nothing wrong w/localities making decisions on what can be sold -- no reason Court should do marketing for the porno industry, said David. All nets w/film of primarily confused or upset porno marketeers tho one professed they'd make it. Nets noted all 4 RN appointees plus White made the anti-porno rulings.
