NEWS SUMMARY
May 15, 1974
(Tues. nets, wires)
The major stories of the day:
-
UPI leads: "Judiciary, set to serve a 2nd subpoena on RN before
its next hearing, traced his hour-by-hour actions in the 3 days
following W'gate break-in. 11 Story led all nets which noted vote
Wed. on whether to subpoena 4/4/72 conversation among RN/HRH/
JNM. CBS reported 1 GOP predicted approval by a very wide
margin (ABC also noted.) All nets noted Rodino rejected St. Clair
presentation of memo outlining RN's objections to subpoenas on
grounds it violated Comm. rules by referring to confidential
material. As for Doar's "painstaking reconstruction" (CBS) of
events of June 17-28, NBC quoted 1 MC on the presentment:
"You could feel the noose tightening."
-
All nets noted Post's discovery of 2 different versions of t'scripts
including ABC/CBS interviews w/NY bond salesman Northrup
who 1st spotted discrepancy and informed Post. NBC/CBS noted
Judiciary/Jaworski say discovery underscores their need for
actual tapes. Rather reported there also said to be major differences
in 3 t'scripts made WH, Judiciary, and Jaworski of 3/21 tape
PJB on ABC/NBC film declared t'scripts don't show evidence
of RN's having committed impchble offense -- on ABC said
"on that vital, critical score, I say unalterably no. ".--"which is,
he added on NBC, "what it's all about" and on ABC, the "central
question. 11 ABC/NBC noted he declared an RN resignation under
pressure would be fatal to GOP and "poison the well" of US
politics for years to come.
-
Maxine Cheshire report on PN-jewels "triggered an indignant reaction"
from WH, noted Cronkite. All nets detailed the background of
Saudi gift and Cheshire's charge gift wasn't even recorded or in
official custody til she began inquiring about it. Warren denied
that saying gift was recorded even while in PN wall safe. Nets
noted he called report "sensationalized" and completely blown
out of proportion (ABC/NBC), and a totally inexcusable effort
to demean 1st Family (CBS).
