THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY May 15, 1974 (Tues. nets, wires) The major stories of the day: - UPI leads: "Judiciary, set to serve a 2nd subpoena on RN before its next hearing, traced his hour-by-hour actions in the 3 days following W'gate break-in. 11 Story led all nets which noted vote Wed. on whether to subpoena 4/4/72 conversation among RN/HRH/ JNM. CBS reported 1 GOP predicted approval by a very wide margin (ABC also noted.) All nets noted Rodino rejected St. Clair presentation of memo outlining RN's objections to subpoenas on grounds it violated Comm. rules by referring to confidential material. As for Doar's "painstaking reconstruction" (CBS) of events of June 17-28, NBC quoted 1 MC on the presentment: "You could feel the noose tightening." - All nets noted Post's discovery of 2 different versions of t'scripts including ABC/CBS interviews w/NY bond salesman Northrup who 1st spotted discrepancy and informed Post. NBC/CBS noted Judiciary/Jaworski say discovery underscores their need for actual tapes. Rather reported there also said to be major differences in 3 t'scripts made WH, Judiciary, and Jaworski of 3/21 tape PJB on ABC/NBC film declared t'scripts don't show evidence of RN's having committed impchble offense -- on ABC said "on that vital, critical score, I say unalterably no. ".--"which is, he added on NBC, "what it's all about" and on ABC, the "central question. 11 ABC/NBC noted he declared an RN resignation under pressure would be fatal to GOP and "poison the well" of US politics for years to come. - Maxine Cheshire report on PN-jewels "triggered an indignant reaction" from WH, noted Cronkite. All nets detailed the background of Saudi gift and Cheshire's charge gift wasn't even recorded or in official custody til she began inquiring about it. Warren denied that saying gift was recorded even while in PN wall safe. Nets noted he called report "sensationalized" and completely blown out of proportion (ABC/NBC), and a totally inexcusable effort to demean 1st Family (CBS).
