NEWS SUMMARY
August 3, 1974
(Fri. nets, wires, papers)
The major stories:
-- Sirica sentenced Dean to 1-to-4 years, requiring that
he serve at least one full year. Leading all nets, Dean
characterized by nets as man who provided "biggest break"
(ABC) for Wgate prosecutors. "RN's chief accuser" (CBS)
had been haunted by prospect of jail, said CBS, and now
sought delay in sentencing. But NBC said Sirica believed
Dean had received all the breaks he was entitled to.
ABC/NBC noted letters from Dash and Ervin attesting to
Dean's cont'd cooperation, w/ABC noting Dash personally
present for sentencing. Dean given one month to prepare
personal affairs. All nets noted his future testimony,
w/ABC observing perhaps even for "that final forum" in
Senate trial of RN. Chancellor noted Dean makes 14th
former WH aide who pled guilty or convicted, w/50 men
in all having been accused of Wgate-related crime.
AP leads: "WH cast RN in role of underdog" in what Warren
termed "uphill struggle a political struggle" to avoid
impchmnt. All nets noted and, in 3 or #4 stories, reported
RN's "very good" spirits. ABC said WH for 1st time
acknowledged what everyone else's been saying about impch
prospects, and "shift in emphasis" raised speculation
WH will try holding GOP/southern Dems in line by appealing
to constituents. "Almost certainly,' said ABC, there 11
be no inflammatory remarks about Hill or MCs. CBS said
new emphasis comes after RN's listened to tapes for 2
days, and (joined by ABC) noted RN/Rebozo cruise Thurs.
nite. NBC reported Sr. WH official said situation is
"serious
damn serious." CBS said 1st glimmerings of
RN strategy could be seen.
--
Over film of Hauser, McCahill, all nets noted WH "fully
complied" (CBS) w/Sirica timetable, delivering 13 more
tapes, among them talks immediately after breakin. While
ABC/NBC briefly noted, CBS reported Jaworski had singled
this batch out as "crucial." All nets noted Hauser said
"yes, sir" when Sirica demanded remaining tapes by next
Wed.
