It is with deep gratification that I look forward to the honor of again serving with President Eisenhower. Your good wishes and warm expression of confidence in me are greatly appreciated and I certainly hope that when you are in Washington, I shall have the opportunity of meeting you. I have heard a great deal about the Bob Jones University and the great work that you have done there. With very best wishes, jack Shaler Sincerely, Richard Nixon Reverend Bob Jones Bob Jones University Greenville, South Carolina Reproduced at Richard Nixon Presidential Library Executive Offices BOB JONES University GREENVILLE SOUTH CAROLINA November 7, 1956 The Honorable Richard Nixon Vice President of the United States Washington, D. C. My dear Sir: I was seventy-three years old a few days ago. I began my ministry as a country boy in Southeast Alabama when I was thirteen years old, and my work has taken me to all the states and to many foreign countries. I have spent my life preaching the Gospel and deal- ing with people. I happen to be the founder of Bob Jones University, but I do not claim great scholarship. I have, however, made a speciality all my life of studying men. I always watch how a man meets a crisis. I want to congratulate you on the courage and the dignity of your approach to the issues of the political campaign which has just come to a close. I sympathize with you in the sorrow that came to you in the loss of your father. In my heart I prayed for you at that time. My son, Bob, Jr., is president of this University; and I know just how a father feels about a son. Now, Mr. Vice President, I believe God has some wonderful things in store for you and a great job for you to do; and I just wanted to tell you, as an old veteran whose temptation has always been to go into politics but who has spent his life preaching the Gospel and help- ing other men in politics (both United States Senators from South Carolina and Senator Carlson are on our Board) and also helping them in a spiritual way, that I am going to pray for you. It might be that you are God's man for this day. Excuse the long letter, but I wanted to tell you that Evangelist Jack Shuler was converted on Bob Jones University campus. I know him well and have great confidence in him. Jack told me he was in college with you; and when you were elected Vice President, he told me that you were going to make good and would be a great leader. Sometime when I happen to be in Washington, I hope I will have the privilege of dropping around and meet- ing you. May God bless you. Sincerely yours, Bol Jour Founder and Chairman of the BJ:ac Board of Trustees Reproduced at Richard Nixon Presidential Library
