On Wednesday, May 19th, 1926, at 10:30 s.m., I attended a conference
of certain officers and directors of the United States Radium Corporation held
at the office of the Company, 30 Church Street, New York City, to meet at his
request Dr. Joseph P. Knef of Newark, New Jersey. At this conference I as.w
Dr. Knef for the first time.
Dr. Knef stated that he had asked for this conference as he was look-
ing for justice, that he had done nuch research work in connection with the 80-
called radium necrosis ceses, had spent nuch time in treating patients who had
been employed by the United States Radium Corporation and that he had not been
sufficiently paid for his services and that he must be paid by some one. He
stated that he knew of many more cases which were coming up, which cases might
result in further suits against the Company. If we would pay hin now $10,000
he would work with us but if we would not pay hin $10,000 he would have to work
against us and would cause hie patients to bring suit against the Corporation
in order that they might obtain funds out of which he could be paid. He stated
that not only could he influence patiente in the natter of bringing suit but also
as a witness he could testify either way - that is, that the trouble was caused
by
radium it was not causeed by radium personing secress some other
cause such as pyrrchea. He exhibited a number of photographs and ex-ray films
and explained same in some detail. He kept constantly repeating that he must
be compensated for hie services. He auggested that he be given a list of the
girls who had previously worked for the Corporation in order that he could lo-
cate then and try to influence them to take his treatment, which treatment he
had worked out through his research work on the subject of radium necrosis.
He wanted to know if we were going to play ball with him. He stated that he
knew more about the subject of radium necrosi 8 than anyone else and that he
could testify in a way that would result in judgments against the Company.
