sulphide. It is, however, Ampossible to assort because no radion has been
detected in the dust (the dust boing demonstrably derived from "Undark") that it
therefore contains no radium. Te believe that 9 and therefore radium,
is dissominated about the painting room and adjacent offices as a suspension of
very minute quantitios in the air.
By means of dental films, we endaavored to determine the amount of
radiation in the plant. Pfahler (5) has established the fact that any fogring of
a soaled dental film within two weake 10 evidence of an over-expesure to radium or
X-Tays. Filmo placed in various spots in the plant - store-Foom, telephone
operator's room, office, etc. - all showed elight but definite fogging within one
to tiro weeks. Tilma placed in 10r. Viedt's and in Mr. Roth's desica showed mariced
fogging at the end of a wook, Films in the peinting room showed distinct forging
at the end of two end thase days, those at the weighing room end boing
the daricest. We have more films yet to be from. Some are being carried
by Smith and by Dr. Tehman and othors are in place in the painting room, but
the fogging of all films which have alrondy been returned to us constitutes,
in our opinion, definite evidence of an excessive exposure to gamma rediation.
In an attempt to determine whother or not radium has shown any effects on
the personnel, we investimited the genord health of the employees and their
personal hygiene in the plent; we also examinod the teeth and the blood of a
representative group of varkors. In all, twenty-two individuals from various
parts of the plant wero examined, fourteen of whom we considered to have had a
long or an extensive exposure to radium or to "Undark: and eight of whom we con-
sidered to have hnd a slight exposure. Thirteen of these individuals wore employ-
ed in dial painting or were working in the room with the dial painters. Nearly
all of the workerg reported themsolves to be in good honlth. The general con-
ditions of work were good and did not seem to produce fatigue, eyo-straih, or
other cause of complaint except a porsistent luminosity of the persons of the
vorkers.
Table 1, included at the end of the report, gives a summary of our find-
ings upon the dental condition of the employees examined.
Table 2 gives a swary of our findinga in the bloods of the twenty-tiro
individuals examined as compared with normal findings. The simificiace of these
findinge is that no blood was entirely normal, and that the findings characterie-
tie of exposure to radium or to in exceesive amount appear in many dases
on ezanination of the blood filma (2) (3) (4). The chief foatures are a reduction
in the white coll count, a docrease in the percentage of cells
and an incrense in the percentage of lymphocytes. These seme findings are noted
in some instances in the reporte of the Life Extension Institute upon the healti
of your employees, but the institute does not appear to have been aware of their
meaning. If wa commider only the fourteen cases with the greater exposuro,
instead of the mixed gour of twansy-two, the percentage of blood abnormalities
among your employeos de morkedly increased. The demonstration by us and by the
Life Istension Instituto of this peculiar typo of blood demago among your
employees - a blood pãoture that has boen so well-recognized in the literature -
constitutes bayond contention a proof of excessivo exposure to Tadiom in your
factory.
CONCLUSIONS.
What then are our conclusions as to the causation of the nocrosis of the
Jaw which has occurred in your plant? In the abgence of any demonstration of
