REPORT or AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CAUSE OF NECROSIS OF THE JAW
OCOURRING IN CERTAIN TORKERS EMPLOYED BY OR TOMIERLY IN THE
RUPLOY OF THE UNITED STATES RADIUI CORPORATION.
This investigation tas bogun following the receipt of a letter from
Itr. Rodder, dated 12,1924, giving en account of ter cases of necrosie of
the jom occurting in employees of the United States Radium Corporation -
one fatal case and one existing case, supposedly on the mend.
Careful inquiries and investigations made during two visits to the plant
in Orange hatre enabled us to trace the following instances of chronic disesse
processes occurring in the Jaw bones or employees in the application of
luminous paint.
Case 1. - 11. Maggia, employed from October 1,1917, to January
25th,1922, developed a necrosie of the jom and later died.
Cage 11. - Mães Virginia Fudolph, employed from Septenber 23,1918, to
April 13,1921, devoloped, following the extraction of a tnoth by Dr. W.T.Barry
of Herrark, a rapidly progressing necrosic of the jan, not Improved by curetting

or

times.
lies Trudolph finally died as a result of this disense
process.
Case 111. - Viss Vincent (Now lirs. Ruser) employed from 1917 to 1920
inclusive, developed, following the extraction of a tooth five months ago,
progressive necrosis of the necessitsting the removel of mach of her left
uppor Jan and tro blood transfusions. Dr. Theodore the dertal surgeon
in charge of this reports that a necrotic process has now begun in the
right side of the lorrer jam and that the pationt is in a very serious condition.
Case lv. - Mies Margarot Carlough, employed, by her own and hor
sister's account, for a period of six and ono-half years ending last December,
beran to fail in health three years ago. Hor symptoms were extreme Intigue and
weskess with pallor. She continued Hor work in spite of increasing 11 honlth
and in October,1924, developed a toothache with local swolling of the face.
On December 24,1923, she had en upper and lower richt molar pulled, a piece of
decayed bone coming out with one of these teeth. She then stopped work. Normal
henling of the Jam did not ensue; instend, a discharge of pus began and persisted.
Later two other teeth at somo distance beceme affectod and were extracted.
She has, at present, in addition to the in the lower Jaw, a new sinus
in the upper jaw communicatini with the antrom, as shown by X-rays. Her
appearance is very bad. She has lost mach weight and ie very pale. ller blood,
on microscopical emmination, shors a profound anemis. Sho complains of pain
in the bones of her fnee, has considerable inconvenience from the discharge of
foul pus in Her mouth and is forced to spend much of her time in bed. She says,
however, that lately the has folt a little better - a statement not in accord
with her appearance and with the now septic process. We believe this girl to
be in an extremely serious condition.
The accompanying X-rays show the condition of Mãss Carlown's Jem on
May 7,1924. These films show necrosie of the right upper maxilla with a gront
deal of clouding of the antrum and un apparent tendency to extend into the nose.
The necrosis is not yot great enoudh to cause loss of all the teeth, but the
condition of the antruo and the tendency of the process to extend upwards toward
the sicull mokes one Na possible onnet of menin/itis.
