THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
7 April 1995
MEMORANDUM TO DOUG SOSNIK
FROM:
Harold Ickes
NB
SUBJECT:
Gordon Giffin -- Georgia
On 5 March, I met with Gordon Giffin, who, as you know, is very
close to Senator Nunn. He is very involved in the Olympics which
will take place in Atlanta during July for approximately 19 days.
He is certainly prepared to do anything we want him to do in
Georgia. He's very committed to the President. He is also
prepared to assume a wider role in the campaign, which he would
be interested in talking to both of us about the next time he is
in Washington. He is in Washington typically 2 or 3 times a
month.
Its my understanding that he is very savvy about Georgia in
particular and the South in general, and I think we should make
full use of his talents and expertise.
With respect to Senator Nunn, Gordon feels that he is going
through a very personal decision about whether to run or not and
thought it was 50/50 as to whether he will run. If Nunn decides
not to run, he thinks its possible for a Democrat to win the
Senate seat, but it will very much depend upon the dynamics of
that particular campaign, the Republican opposition, and the
Democratic candidate.
In addition to having a broader role in the campaign, if we want
him to, he will work with Debra DeLee on a fairly consistent
basis in connection with the '96 Convention. He has considerable
expertise in conventions and negotiated the contract with the
city of Chicago for the '96 Convention.
Finally, he suggested that we have someone get the videos of
President Reagan in connection with the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
to give some idea about what Reagan did at and with that event.
