Near the intersection of Broadway and Madison Avenue, New York, an immense excavation has been made for the foundations of a new building; its walls are shored up, and a tall crane rises from a platform near the bottom of the pit. A thin zigzag line across the shores, 3 1/2 in. from the foot of the plate and 5 1/2 in. from the left side, have been retouched and straightened by the addition of short slanting lines which cross it.

Near the intersection of Broadway and Madison Avenue, New York, an immense excavation has been made for the foundations of a new building; its walls are shored up, and a tall crane rises from a platform near the bottom of the pit. In states 2-5 there was a tramcar on Madison Avenue, close to the left side of the plate; this has been effaced. The other side of the tall upright member of the crane is also shaded. Long slanting rays of light appear on the house in Madison Avenue beyond the intersection of the other street. The bundle hanging from the slanting member of the crane (chain nets to go over dynamite charges in the excavation) is much shaded all over, and not very clearly detached at the lower end from the background of wall.

The radiating lines over the arched door of the house beneath the flag have been made more definite, especially towards the right. The upper windows of the house just to the right of this, across the street, have been retouched, dark patches being added across the top of each window.

These buildings are now put in, and there is an approach to completeness all over the plate. The placard has been worked over with light vertical lines cancelling the inscription, of which traces can still be seen.

The street Is crowded with carts, including a brewer's dray. In the distance the Cathedral spire rises high above the houses. The plate is unfinished and a wide strip on the left regains blank. The spire is re- touched. New horizontal shading on extreme left of unfinished houses.
