The bust of Mrs. Drummond, three-quarter face to the right, the shoulders heavily shaded, occupies the upper half of the plate. Below, to the left, is the unfinished head of a young man, with dark hair, begun in the upper corner of the plate when held as an oblong.

Seated, in three-quarter face to right, with hands clasped on her lap. She wears a black cap and a close-fitting shawl. The background is shaded, heavily at the top, more lightly below. In the first state, the right hand appears to be detached from the arm. In this state, the lower outline of the sleeve and wrist is strengthened to correct this defect. More shading on the right shoulder, below the right arm, and on the knees ; also on the background round the head ; towards the right the shading of the background is lightened.

Seated, in three-quarter face to right, with hands clasped on her lap. She wears a black cap and a close-fitting shawl. The background is shaded, heavily at the top, more lightly below. Additional shading in fine lines all round the head and in many parts of the background. Long vertical lines are continued past the knee. New shading on the dress beneath the hands. Above and to the left of the chair-back, which is partly worked over and obscured, the shading is carried right up to the edge of the plate.

Near Chichester

Both shores of an estuary are seen, with a sailing vessel at anchor towards the right under the down. In the foreground to the left is a summer-house, with bushes and a shed behind it, stands within a fenced enclosure. Near the corner of the fence is a rowing boat, more to the right a sailing boat in which a man stands, attending to the furled sail; another small sailing boat lies on dry land, its stern fastened by a rope to a tub. The tackle at the top of the mast of the sailing boat last named has been retouched and darkened. The outline of the bowsprit of the same boat have been strengthened and the lines run together towards the right. The grass near the bow of the boat, under the bowsprit, has been darkened.

A narrow river, winding through flat country, is crossed on the right by a foot-bridge with wooden rails, on which a man sits, wearing a hat. On the further bank a man is riding, and a windmill is seen in the distance. Done from: nature, between Southwold and Walberswick. The man in a hat was Charles Aitken, Director of the Tate Gallery.
