On the left are precipitous cliffs, crowned by the city of Orvieto. Beneath the rocks two roads converge, one of which mounts under olive trees from the distant valley, while the other, more open, with oxen carts upon it, passes on the left under a mass of masonry over which a man is leaning. Beyond the cultivated plain we see a distant range of hills. The comer of a terrace jutting up, near the left lower corner, with a man leaning over the wall, which had appeared in all states up to this point, has been effaced, and the road is continued up to the left end of the plate. There is much fresh shading on the road beneath the cart and oxen, and strong fresh work fills up gaps in the roadside foliage, especially what was hitherto a white patch exactly halfway across the plate and 23-30 mm. above the lower platemark. Beneath the road is a patch of strong black shading, beyond which is a triangular white patch extending to the left lower corner of the plate.
