Sterling Castle - No. 1

The castle buildings rise from a precipitous cliff, the highest point of which is approximately half way across the plate. Beneath the rock the broken ground still falls steeply. On its lower slopes is a cluster of houses; to the nearest of these a round out-house is attached, with a curious conical roof. The castle and rock are drawn in all essentials, but the slope of the hill is not yet put in, and there are no buildings in the lower part of the plate except one unfinished house towards the left.

The same composition as Dodgson number 254, but carried out in more detail, with all the shadows intensified. Many of the houses are omitted. The bushes are heavily reworked at the place indicated, for the distance of 23 to 31 mm. and again 37 to 48 mm. from the left side of the plate. There is a fresh patch of shadow at the foot of the rock 77 to 90 mm. from the same side. There is heavier shading on a bank above the field in which the horse and two women stand, and the trees rising above the fence on the right of the same field are darkened.

A view of the old town (Staden) from across the harbour on the south side (Soder Malm) with 2 church spires, those of the Tyska Kyrkan (left) and Riddatholms Kyrkan, rising into the sky, and the new town-hall (Stadshus) on the right. Before the railings along the side of the bridge above which a road crosses the railway, at a great height above it, low down on the right. The rails in the railway bridge across the water are Incomplete, and the surface of the bridge is to a great extant white throughout its distance. The straight high wall of a building just above the motor-car near right lower comer of the plate is lightly shaded. A long trail of smoke, very lightly scratched, drifts away to the left from a chimney to left of the spire nearest to the left end of the plate.

Stockwell Bridge, Glasgow

We look from the south to the north bank of the Clyde. On the left a stone bridge, of which five arches are seen, crosses the river. The quays on the northern side are lined by high tenement houses. Beyond the street to which the bridge leads a tall tower, relic of the old Merchants' House, dominates all other buildings. More to the left is the classical facade of the Fish Market. There are barges in the foreground and a steamer has just passed under the bridge. There is now a third tower above the pediment. The second tower already mentioned is partially effaced but still visible. On the mud banks to the left we see one figure to left and two to right of the boat. Four men are at work on or about the barges in the immediate foreground ; there is more work on the barges themselves and elsewhere.

A similar subject to the last (Dodgson number 406), but continued to the right, where a domed building surmounted by a lantern is seen. In the foreground is a row of barges along the shore, on one of which the name BIRGER appears. The new work on the spire reduced; it is now less dark than the short tower immediate to the left of it. The outline of the sack has been completed.

In the foreground is a row of barges along the shore, on one of which the name BIRGER appears. The right leg of the man on the right is incomplete. The mast, sail and tackle of a boat just above the man are put in, but not the man himself.

In the distance, beyond a bridge, is the opera house. Poplars and other trees, blown about by a gusty wind, grow in a garden overlooking the water, in which, under the balustrade, five fishing-boats are moored, four of which have their round nets let down. Sky and opera house very unfinished. The water, to the right, is not shaded, and contains two figures slightly sketched.

A repetition of Beak Street (Dodgson number 194), in the same direction. The subject is not arched at the top, and picturesqueness is sacrificed to accuracy by the omission of the Gothic spire. About six conspicuous black lines have been inserted on the tilt of a cart just over the head of the man who stands holding the ladder on the left.

The building against which the ladder rests is drawn in outline, and the shading of the foreground extends only 1/4 in. below the foot of the ladder.
