The view, drawn from nature, but In reverse as printed, from the hill over Farringford in the Isle of Wight, looking across the Solent, towards Hurst Castle and the New Forest. Golden Hill Fort, with smoke rising from a gun, is on the near shore. On the right is the Totland Bay Hotel. The shaded slope of the hill is continued towards the left. The smoke of the gun re-drawn. Hurst Castle retouched. Distant landscape much darkened and fresh rain-clouds above it. Much new work in upper part of sky, especially to the left. Trees in foreground, and all the landscape extensively re-worked.

Opposite the fountain we see the facade of the church, with shops on either side. In the foreground are carts, drawn by mules and oxen. On the left a man digs; a priest stands on the right near a rock, above which a massive pilaster rises, with a Corinthian capital. Some irregular lines on the ground on either side of the ox on the left have been removed. The lower line of the railing and the outlines of the lower steps beyond the fountain have made more regular.

Opposite the fountain we see the facade of the church, with shops on either side. In the foreground are carts, drawn by mules and oxen. On the left a man digs; a priest stands on the right near a rock, above which a massive pilaster rises, with a Corinthian capital. There are spokes in the left (near) wheel of the cart. The woman has vanished in deep shadow. The pilasters on the front of the house have been burnished down. The scaffolding on the extreme left, along edge of the plate, ceases 2 13/16 inches below the top of the plate. The two slender posts to right of this scaffolding have been raised.

Between the cart and the priest two men are talking to a woman.
