Source Description

This hand-drawn plan (lithograph) measures 73 x 66 cm. It is matted with a cream colored matte and has a label at one corner that reads “Lawrence Duck Co. (Cotton Mills) Lawrence, Mass. surveyed June 1894 scale of plan 1 in. = 40 ft.” The drawing is in color and is rich with detail. Both a three dimensional and a flat map plan are shown. Notation on the bottom right corner of the plan says that the plan is drawn from “careful tape-line measurements”. Outside proprties were located by pacing. Pipes were often drawn out of their exact location. Distortion of scale may occur during the lithograph process. Diagrams of just what was being done on each floor were draw on the sides. “Cancelled” was stamped on the lower right hand corner. It is labeled plan serial no. 3293.

The Lawrence Duck Company (manufacturers of cotton duck cloth) was established in 1853. Some of the buildings in the plan were built in 1853. This factory made sails for American yacht club defenders. Building number 1 was built in 1853; number 2 – 1872; number 3 – 1880; cotton store house -1879; number 2 ell – 1872. The buildings use water power and steam heat; lighting was gas. 10,000 spindles were employed with 300 hands (150 on premises each day). Time was watched by Buerk watch clock and watchmen were always on duty. The factory had a good water supply with fire hydrants nearby. There was a fire alram telegraph on premisis.
