With respect to the Chair at Columbia, this professor was picked by the
academic board and the sole condition that I applied was that the man selected
must be loyal to America and to the former Polish Government. Through every
means available to the officials at Columbia, this professor's past was investi-
gated and he was considered from every standpoint the outstanding individual
to develop appreciation for ancient Polish culture in that great University,
The whole story started because of a disappointed instructor who was
after the position. a man who was considered by the academic officials to be
completely unsuited.
All of the negotiations in this matter were completed before I went to
Columbia as its President, and if any further evidence of any kind is wanted
on the matter, I suggest that the head of the Polish Legion contact President
Albert Jacobs, now President of Denver University and who was at the time
in question Provost of Columbia University.
