Checked by Kardex 147-E RECEIVED August 24, 1959 AUG 2 6 1959 CENTRAL FILES Dear Governor Quinn: It was indeed my great pleasure Friday to sign the proclamation formally admitting Hawaii into the Union as the fiftieth state. 1 understand that your presence was required in Hawaii, but was pleased to have your representative, Mr. Edward Johnston, present at the ceremonies. 1 am sending to you through Mr. Johnston one of the pens used on this historic occasion, and will arrange to provide for the citizens of Hawaii one of the XGF179 two flags displayed last Friday. The addition of Hawaii to the Union brings to reality a dream which Hawaiians have nurtured for so many years and to which you and this Administration have devoted much time and effort. For the Union as a whole it stands as a significant example to the entire world of our belief in the right of all peoples to ireely choose their own form of government. 1 know that the State of Hawaii will stand as a great symbol of the American ideal of freedom and equality for all. My very best wishes to you on the commencement of your important duties as the first elected Governor of the State of Hawaii. Sincerely, DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER The Honorable William F.
