My dear Mr. Bauerle:
Your letter of November fifth to
the President has been received and will,
of course, be made available to him.
In connection with your reference
to the book that you forwarded to the Pres-

explain to you that under a policy of long
standing it is not possible for this office
to comment on the merits of the many
literary undertakings and articles of
various kinds which are constantly being
received. I know that you will understand.
Thank you very much indeed in the

Dear Mr. President:
I am sending you, through Miss Tully, a copy of my new
book, Road to Peace and Freedom, which goes on sale on Tuesday, November
16. There is enough criticism of your foreign policies in this book so that
I do not think anybody can say it was written for political purposes personal
to you. For that reason it may be the more effective in promoting your basic
policies. I can't help thinking that it will have a good deal of influence,
both in foreign policy and in checking the reactionary drift in domestic
affairs, if it gets a wide enough reading.
You spoke of having it on your desk during some press conference.
I hope a reading of it won't dash that idea,

Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
In compliance with a "hunch" of mine, I
am enclosing a copy of a new book, which I have recently
received from the Franciscian Monastery, several medals, etc.,
for your attention, and use.
The Book, "The Prophets and Our Times,"
by Rev. Gerald Culleton, gives super-natural knowledge of
our times and of the times to come, as revealed by God to
various Saints throughout the centuries. Such knowledge, 1
believe, is very necessary for you to have in administering
the affairs of our nation, in these super-critical times. For
fore-knowledge is to be fore-warned. I am quite certain that
you will find the contents of this book very surprising.-
God often reveals to those who live close
to him. I am quite certain that our Saintly Holy Father, Pope
Pius, knows from his close contact with Almighty God, that he
will be forced to flee "Rome", and die a cruel death in exile
a year later. The reason I believe he knows, is that in read-
ing of Arch-bishop Spellman's story of his travels in the
current issues of Colliers, he spoke of the Holy Father having
given to him his gold chain and cross, which he received when
he was consecrated Bishop twenty-five years ago, and has worn
constantly. It read to me as a last parting gift of friend to
friend. 1 hope our government will go # above and beyond the
line of duty", in helping God's Holy Servant.
Again, the food famine, control of which
rests entirely in God's hands, as does everything else. You
will also be surprised to learn that the pagan nations; Russia,
Japan and Turkey will form an alliance to fight the Christian
World. But read for yourself, all this and more.
Two St. Christopher metals are enclosed -
the patron saint of all travelers. After reading an article
in a recent Liberty magazine, of the great force of Secret
Service men needed to protect you in traveling, 1 thought both
you and Mrs. Roosevelt need super-natural protection as well.
So St. Christopher will do the job best of all, so long as his
medals are worn on the person, or carried. Worn by both Non-
Catholics and Catholics in these days - especially by Service Men.
FR-2
To acquaint you with the largest
circulating newspaper of its kind in the United States, 1 am
enclosing a few copies of "Our Sunday Visitor" read by millions
of Catholics and Non-Catholics alike. My reason in doing this
is because it has been cut by the 10% paper reduction, and
faces another cut in the forthcoming additional reduction- it
simply can't be.
After looking at the prolific
output of trashy magazines on the news stands, such as Love
Story, Dectective, Horror, etc., and the valuable paper
wasted on such trash, it seems to me that some discrimination
should be made in this paper reduction business between the
essential and non-essential. Inspirational religious magazines
VS. trash.
The Word of God, and all things
pertaining to God, are more than ever essential this day. For
its the Army on its knees, that is keeping our Army on its feet.
(Prayer). God, is our First Line of Defense. We Need HIM, but
He doesn't need us. So please let us have plenty of paper for
inspirational religious reading, especially such as only
I
catholics can write. The soul needn't starve. I do hope the
"Sunday Visitor" may be restored to its full size soon again
of FOUR SHEETS EVERY WEEK. Thank you.
May the inspiration and blessings of God be with
you and yours - always.
Your Catholic friend,
Misa Florence Mae Belford.

As Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Army, I thought you
might be interested in having a copy of our new 1944 calendar - showing
all of the Honor Medals of the U. S. Armed Forces in full color, with
at
the corresponding ribbon bars.
One of these calendars is being sent to you today under
separate cover.
idg
To my knowledge, this is the first accurate, up-to-date
presentation of Honor Medals and the branches of the Services authorized
to receive them. This presentation of medals represents more than
half a year's research, checking and rechecking with the various branches
of the Services in Washington, all of whom were very cooperative and made
possible this up-to-date and accurate presentation.
Yours respectfully,
Jotzwaska H. Zwaska
JHZ:rlp
Adver tising Manager
P. S. We have received many favorable comments from the various branches
of the Services on this calendar and would appreciate having your
comments.

Dear Mr. President:
In 1936 you were good enough to accept a copy of my
picture "The Prince's Vigil" sent through your then Ambassador,
Mr. Bingham.
Your personal letter of Oct. 10th which you were good
enough to send me then is still one of my treasured possessions.
It emboldens me to ask for present Ambassador Mr. Winant -- whose
character and charm is so fine -- to send to you, begging your
kind acceptance of the same with my compliments and best wishes,
the inscribed prints of what I now call my "E.T.O" Series, U. S.
Army.
These I have had made, because of so many, many requests,
of some of the pictures I have painted to record the fact in paint
for posterity of the U. S. Army being here and fighting with us
and our other Allies for our common freedom.
When I started painting with the U.S.A.A.F. I had no
idea of reproducing any of my pictures in these difficult days.
The appreciation and pleasure they are now giving here and "back
home" has amply repaid all the time and trouble such a venture
entailed.
With the late Colonel Barnum, whose last official act
was to make these prints available to E.T.O. personnel through
all U. S. Army "P. X.'s", I hope they will be "lasting messages
of good will".
I have watched and may I here say how gratefully I
admire the wonderful job you have accomplished through and under
such difficult circumstances. The world has to be very thankful
that three such truly great men as yourself, Churchill and Smuts
are helping to guide its destinies now.
With every good wish

Lt. Col. Henry T. Blair, 0-135056,

APO #942, c/o Postmaster,

30 October 1943.
Major General Edwin M. Watson,
Secretary to the President,
The White House,
Washington, D. C.
Dear General:
Personal
One of the referred-to "unusual things" that I purchased in Nome, and
which I never had seen before, were some Stocks; which is a combination of
sock--shoe that the Eskimoes make to wear inside of their mukluks; and which
I find extremely comfortable and nice to wear as bed-room shoes as they do not
have any stiff parts. These Stocks are made out of either reindeer skin or
moose hide with the fur turned inside. I sent some of them to my good friends,
Thomas J. Watson, Fred H. Eckert, and others around New York, and they seemed
to get a big kick out of them; so, therefore, I ordered a few additional pair
which arrived the first of this week.
I never had the pleasure of personally meeting our President, but I did
have the great pleasure and honor of knowing and occasionally seeing his
adorable, brainy, grand, and charming mother during the last years of her
life. And in memory of the great pleasure that it gave me to see and be with
her, I, in ordering the additional pairs of Stocks, asked that one pair of them
be a little finer and more unusual than the others with the idea of my sending
that pair to the President; and I hope that he will find as much pleasure out of
wearing them as I enjoy sending them to him. The first of this week I had
shipped from here via mail this referred-to pair of Stocks made from the moose
hide with its being addressed to the President via you; and won't you please be
good enough to, upon receipt of the same, give them to our wonderful President.
Cordially,

London, November 27, 1943.
SUBJECT: Presentation to the President of Certain
Artistic Prints by Mr. Frank E. Beresford.
The Honorable
The Secretary of State,
Washington, D.C.
Sir,
I have the honor to enclose a letter presenting to
the President certain prints of pictures painted by
Mr. Frank E. Beresford, who is now working with the
U. S. Army Forces in this country. These prints, which
are of pictures of American officers and air force units
in this country, are sent as a separate accompaniment to
this despatch. Mr. Beresford, who is an artist of repute,
is an admirer of the United States and it is understood
that he is giving his services free to the U.S. Army.
Mr. Beresford thought the President might be interested
in these prints, particularly since he accepted a copy of
an earlier picture forwarded by Ambassador Bingham in
1936, which the President acknowledged in a letter to
Mr. Beresford. In the light of these circumstances, it
is hoped that the Department will perceive no objection
to having Mr. Beresford's letter and prints transmitted
to the White House.
Respectfully yours,
