"A Chicken in Every Pot" political ad and rebuttal article in New York Times

This is the advertisement that caused Herbert Hoover's opponents to state that he had promised voters a chicken in every pot and two cars in every garage during the campaign of 1928. During the campaign of 1932, Democrats sought to embarass the President by recalling his alleged statement. According to an article in the New York Times (10/30/32), Hoover did not make such a statement. The report was based on this ad placed by a local committee -- which only mentions one car !

"The best advice I ever had" article by Herbert Hoover, July 1959

Readers Digest asked Herbert Hoover to prepare an article on the best advice he had ever received. The resulting article, "Thank You Miss Gray" was published in the July 1959 issue. It was dedicated to a teacher in Salem, Oregon who had a lasting influence on the 15 year old Hoover, tactfully but firmly moulding his character. Unmistakeable evidence of her influence can be found in Hoover's donation of the $2000 he received from Readers Digest to one of his favorite charities, the Boys' Clubs of America. The article was an instant success, and was translated into several foreign languages. It also sold well as a RD Reprint and has frequently been used in literacy campaigns. "Uncommon Man" speech by Herbert Hoover

Probably the best known speech by Herbert Hoover, it celebrates the importance of human achievement and excellance . Originally given during a fund-raising event for Wilmington College in 1948, this speech became very popular and was repeated in slightly altered form by the former president on several ocassions. This is the text of the original version. The speech has become a favorite of Republicans seeking to blame Democrats for encouraging mediocrity and "the cult of the common man ".
