Readers Digest asked Herbert Hoover to prepare an article on the best advice he had ever received. The resulting article, "Thank You Miss Gray" was published in the July 1959 issue. It was dedicated to a teacher in Salem, Oregon who had a lasting influence on the 15 year old Hoover, tactfully but firmly moulding his character. Unmistakeable evidence of her influence can be found in Hoover's donation of the $2000 he received from Readers Digest to one of his favorite charities, the Boys' Clubs of America. The article was an instant success, and was translated into several foreign languages. It also sold well as a RD Reprint and has frequently been used in literacy campaigns. For more about Miss Grey see Burt Brown Barker's oral history account which is also part of this project.
