KENNAN:\nFormosa was/in the same situation as Japan and the Philippines; we did\nnot need to occupy it ourselves but we could not tolerate its being occupied\nby another great power hostile to ourselves.\nMR. ACHESON:\nThat is very much wat he said in that message to the Vetarans of Foreign\nWars, except that he dwelt more on the importance of Formosa in that one\nhe had\nthan/in any of his earlier statements.\nmerely\nMR. KENNAN:\nI wanted to emphasize that he, too, did not include Korea.\nDR. FEIS:\nI wanted to ask a question\nbefore that, I would say that you did\nrecommend [?] adopting a doctrine\nyou say you were going to do something\nin the interests of the \"polulation of the Ryukyu Islands\"\n[CONFUSION]\nAccording to the text I am reading - it may be an incorrect text -- it says\nthat you were going to do something in the interests of the \"poluation\" of\ndlike\nthe Ryjkyu Islands, and I wanted- to know what you had in mind. [LAUGHTER]\nmileheson:\ntim not hesponsible for that teel\nDr Deis:\nNow I'll go on with my next. It would be hardly likely, Dean -- this is\nan attempt to prod your memory -- that you would enter into so extensive a\ndiscussion of these [ouré?] military intentions and purpose without an\namost formal clearance on this subject from the military establishment.\nCan you remember how much talk you might have had on this phase of the speech\nwith the military establishment?\nMR. ACHESON:\nI don't remember having any talk about that, but I think that idea was fully\naccepted by the military establishment and undoubtedly was in these memoranda\nwhich I took home and from which I prepared these notes.
