NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS CABINET MEETING, JULY 12, 1946 SERVICE THE PRESIDENT Asked War to discuss Aug 14 as celebration of end of war. PATTERSON Suggested local celebration rather than national legal holiday. LABOR The matter must be handled very carefully. Thinks that sacri- fices should be called to attention of people - be called upon to strive to develop additional unity. NAVY (Sullivan) Suggest call upon churches to offer spiritual thanks. PATTERSON Thinks parades and solemn celebration in communities would be helpful. THE PRESIDENT Agreed that proclamation along these lines be made. PATTERSON Submitted memo to Pres. urging Gov. Simcheck Fed Res Bd for Military Govt in Germany. The idea supported by State Dept - op- posed by Chairman Eccles. KRUG Suggest giving employees time off for Jap-American Troops parade on July 15th. THE PRESIDENT Agreed it should be done. FLEMING Highway Safety Conference resulted in saving 600 lives in May.
