My dear Mayor Jeffries:
I have your gracious letter, addressed to the
President, expressing the concern of the people of
Detroit over recent happenings in the South.
The Department of Justice has been directed

by the President to proceed with all its resources in
the investigation of every case of alleged Federal

violation of civil rights, If such a violation can
be proved, the case will be vigorously prosecuted by
the Department of Justice.
The President is fully appreciative of your
concern for the protection of the civil rights of all
our citizens regardless of race, creed, or national
origin. Let me assure you and the citizens of your
city of the President's determination to see that they
are upheld.
