Dear Mr. President;
It has been brought to my attention that at this
moment there is on your desk the Navajo Hopi Rehabilitation
Bill, S. 1407. I understand riders have been added to Section
9 of this Bill known as the Social Security and Law and Order
Clauses, which open up the possibility of the loss of civil
and economic rights for these groups. Having many Indian
friends, and realizing some of the difficulties they already
live under, I am concerned with the welfare of the Indian
and feel that it is desirable that you veto the Bill and send
a strong message to the Congress asking that the Bill be passed
again without these riders. I sincerely hope that you will
consider the welfare of all those Indians whose rights are at
stake, and act in that way which we feel is only right.
Yours respectfully,
Mayout Burry Berry
