Lebanese MINFONAFF called on me yesterday to express
his GOVT'S "Heartfelt thanks for AMER GOVT'S constant
understanding support of Levant cause and for its deter-
mining intervention in crisis just past"; and at small
family dinner President Khoury, whose regained vigor was
apparent, spoke earnestly with me in same sense. Both
asked that President Truman be so informed.

While both understood well that Gen Pagedo's mission
was not to settle political issues but to restore order
where armed conflict had occurred, each was insistent that
Lebanon should not be left in more onerous relationship
than Syria vis-a-vis French; Lebanon and Syria had been
united throughout.
