EMBAJADA DE CHILE
WASHINGTON 6
COPY
With the unanimous approval of the Cabinet, the
heads of the various political parties, leaders of
Congress, the heads of the unions, and public opinion
in general, the President of Chile, Mr. Gabriel
Gonzalez Videla, decided to denounce the agreement
respecting the price and distribution of copper, made
in May 1951 with the Government of the United States
of America.
The denouncement covers two points of the
ARCHIVES AL SERVICE'
Agreement: a) 20% freely disposable and, therefore,
recovery by Chile of freedom to dispose of 100% of the
production of the large mines; b) the agreement on a
price of 27.5 cents per pound for copper that was being
sold to the United States.
The Ambassador of Chile in Washington was
instructed to previously announce this denouncement
to the Department of State, and to afterwards indicate
by note to the same Department that the denouncement
would take effect on May 8th.
Also, he received instructions to personally
explain to His Excellency The President of the United
States, and to the Department of State, the very grave
reasons which motivated the Chilean Government to take
a resolution, which could not be postponed.
