Bidault let me read the telegram which GEN de Gaulle
sent in reply to the President's message (DEPTS 2565
June 6)
HE said: I'I told him not to put in the first
.
two paragraphs; only the last paragraph was of any use;
and I trust that your President will not pay too much
attention to the first two paragraphs. They do not mean
anything. The important thing is that GENERAL Juin has
already left for Caserta with conciliatory pertinent
instructions and I hope that you will be satisfied vith
the results of his conversations."
HE repeated again that de Gaulle had repeated agnins
last night that France has no annexationist designs in
northwest Italy and wants only a minor rectification of the
frontier which he believes possible to achieve by negotiatic
in a regular manner with the Italian GOVT.
