I add that I intend to s end without delay similar directives to the Commander in Chief of the Fren forces in GErmany. I wish to conv ey to you the great appreciation of the Fren Govt for the initiative which you have just taken which if it is followed by the prompt arrival in France of important quantities of GErman coal, will permit our country to play a more impor- tant role in the conduct of military operations against the common EnEmy and in the E-Establishment of Economic conditions necessary for stability and peace in the world. I wish, however, to Emphasize the extreme urgency of our needs. If France cannot import important quantities of coal during the summer months, the Govt will be obliged to reduce further its already further its already extremely fEEblE industrial production. Thus, for Example, the coming sugar beEt harvest will be largely lost because of the lack of necessary fuel. for refining. is the
