PERSONAL
Dear Mr. President:
I am very grateful for your letter of January 28
about our problem with the security position in Australia.
I much appreciate the personal interest you have taken in
this delicate matter.
I am sure that your decision to ask your
Secretary of Defense to invite Sir Frederick Shedden to
visit Washington on his way to London next May and to
have full and frank discussions with him will contribute
in a large measure to the solution of various problems
common to all three Administrations.
In the meantime I am happy to be able to assure
you that the appropriate authorities in this country are in
constant and fruitful touch with the Australian Government,
and that satisfactory progress has been reported to me in
improving Australian security and maintaining a higher
standard.
Yours sincerely,
/s/ C.R. Attlee
