NOTES ON CHILEAN VISIT
November 1, 1946.
After an altogether pleasant sea voyage in perfect
weather the squadron anchored off the City of Valparaiso at
nine o'clock in the forenoon watch. At the Equator we found
cool weather that changed our uniform to blue and that
remained with us to anchorage.
An Argentine Fleet of eleven vessels commanded by
Rear Admiral Martinez in the Battleship Moreno, had preceded
us into port.
November 2:
At 9:45 Rear Admiral Martinez, Commanding the Argen-
tine Naval Forces in Chile, made a protocol visit. He took
the occasion to assure me that the Government of Argentina
is completely friendly and will cooperate fully with the U.S.
He told me that in the recent past Argentina had some diffi-
culties with communists but that they have now been cleared
out of the country.
At 10:30 a.m. made a formal call on the Minister of
Defense, General Carrasco Carrasco,
At 11:00, upon the request of the President-elect
Gonzales-Videla, called at his private apartment and had an
interesting and useful half hour's conversation with him.
He speaks French and understands English well enough to permit
an easy exchange of information between us. He expressed
