OF CHILE AT HIS INAUGURAL BANQUET
The Charter of the United Nations has already given
us the legal instruments by which Nations may continue their
search for peace and security. The Government which has just
been inaugurated in Chile, feels certain that all the difficulties
which might be incurred in the application of this international
constitution will be overcome because it (the Government) knows
that all Nations which subscribe to the Charter are working
together to achieve a just, permanent and universal peace.
The possibility of attaining these ideals is not merely
a theoretical concept; it is founded on tangible acts.
Boundaries and distances no longer isolate Nations. The Nations
of the world form a whole, each one concerned with the common
problems of the international community. The era of absolute
sovereignty has ended, and peoples without exception tend towards
the establishment of a true brotherhood.
The Government of Chile endorses this principle. For this
reason, gentlemen, the Government of Chile has decided to
continue extending its loyal and enthusiastic support to the
United Nations Organization, taking into account not only the
letter of the Charter, but also the spirit of generosity and
friendship among Nations which is implied in its articles.
This enthusiastic cooperation with the principles of the
Charter does not differ in any way from Chile's traditional
Foreign Policy of inter-American solidarity and her desire to
make workable economic ties with all her brothers of the North
and South American continents. The Government sees in this
policy the principles necessary for attaining the cohesive
political union which the liberators of Chile envisioned.
