He impressed me as having a desire to receive from the United States a sympathetic consideration of his efforts to improve the industrial and financial condition of his country. This desire may naturally include financial assistance in the development of native industry either from the U.S. Government, from North American financial interests, or from both. Gonzales-Videla - with whom I was acquainted in France, is young, energetic, popular with his people, and extremely attractive. His program as related to me certainly faces difficulties with the well entrenched "Economic Royalists" who have traditionally controlled the Government of Chile. Following my talk with the Prosident I held a press conference in the hotel with a number of local press representa- tives. Ambassador Bowers who was present gave the press a letter written by President Truman regarding the inclusion of an excellent Chilean musical composition in a recent symphony concert in Washington. This letter appeared to make a very favorable impression on the correspondents. ARCHIVES A) November 3 - Sunday: In company with Ambassador Bowers attended at 2:30 p.m. the assumption of office of President of Chile by Mr. Gonzales - Videla in the "Hall of Honor" of the State House.
