With Ambassador Bowers I attended at 10:00 p.m.
a great state dinner of 180 ladies and gentlemen given by
the President in his residence the "Moneda" in celebration
of his inauguration ems all the guests were in full dress with
decorations from many governments.
The food was excellent and there were long after
dinner speeches in Spanish which I, of course, did not under-
stand.
Both the Ambassador and I managed to get out of the
crowded gathering shortly after midnight which permitted me
to reach my hotel room at one o'clock a.m.
November 5:
The President accompanied by all the diplomatic
and special foreign representatives, accompanied by their
ladies, departed from Santiago at noon by special train for
Valparaiso. Ambassador Bowers and I were given the very
special attention of being asked by the President to occupy
seats in his special car. We had an elaborate lunch on the
train and disembarked at Vina del Mar where we found rooms
provided at the Hotel Miramar.
From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. we participated with the
President in an inspection of naval ships in the following
order; Argentine Battleship MORENA, Flagship of Rear Admiral
Martinez; U.S.S. WISCONSIN, Flagship of Vice Admiral Fechteler;
U.S. Airplane Carrier LEYTE; Chilean Battleship LATORRE, Flag-
ship of Rear Admiral del Campo.
