The President asked me to see him in his summer home at noon and I then at 2:30 a.m. returned to the hotel. Night hours observed in Chile are unusual to us from North America and upsetting to our established routine. Dinner starts at nine or ten o'clock and subsequent enter- tainments may and usually do continue until the early morning hours. November 6: The local press this morning reports that Congressional elections in the United States were a landslide for the Republican party which gained control of both Houses in the Congress. At noon called on the President in his beautiful summer palace overlooking Vina del Mar. He elaborated considerably on his previous statement of the policy of his administration, expressed his personal regret that our election was unfavorable to the Democrats, and expressed also some apprehension as to its effect on our future foreign policy. He repeated that with a not very stable coalition government he is going to need assistance from the United States, particularly in the matters of - 8 -
