that the only real solution to the problem lay in increased
production. The President agreed. The Ambasnador then
mentioned the two- nan United Nations Mission now in Chile
studying the economy of the country, and he also mentioned
a report of the World Bank counselling against further
loans to Chile until measures to overcone inflation had
been adopted. The Ambassador added that this might lead
to a vicious circle because Chile needed the money to in-
crease production and thereby overcome inflation.
Upon leaving the Ambassador expressed his apprecia-
tion of the interest shown by the Administration and the
State Department in Chilean affairs, and said that his
Government was very grateful for this interest and support.
The President responded to the effect that we were
sincerely interested in Chile and that we would do what
we could to help that country in resolving the problens
that faced it.
