As a Christian missionary I cannot remain silent when the per- sonal character or moral integrity of China's National leader, Pres- ident Chiang Kai-shek, is assailed. I am a self-supporting missionary, receiving no salary from any source. I have lived as a free, private citizen in China for thirty years and just reached America from Nanking and Taipeh, Formosa, one month ago. I personally know well both the President and Madame Chiang, and have for many years. No nation could have more faithful, devoted, selfless leaders. It is long past time for America to call a halt to irresponsible smear campaigns against these two who have so consistently and persistently taken their stand against communism for so many long years. There should be thanksgiving and appreciation, encouragement and cooperation instead of antagonism, slander, nega- tivism and desertion. Principles are involved and the hour is very late. China's first Christien President is no second to America's Washington and Lincoln as a great praying man, walking humbly with his Lord. I challenge anyone to name a head of state in any part of the world at any time in history more selfless, more devoted, more faithful to his nation's welfare than President Chiang. His honesty and moral integrity are above reproach. As for removal of National Government funds to Formosa, certainly his duty and respon- sibibity would call for such transfer from any threatened war area. The world can be sure not a penny would be used personally. Entirely on my own volition and initiative I make these stat- ments and protest. In common decency and human fairness, Senator Connally should publically apologize for his incriminating accusa- tions in Congress yesterday. Justice demands it. manyfination Mary Fine Twinem 235 East 49th Street New York 17, N.Y. September 8, 1949
