- 3 - effect: "Great Britain has been supplying Egypt for the last ten days (petrol) for the last ten days for over 1 1/2 million of her surplus war material -1936 agreement- If Egypt's civilian petrol is not rationed soon this will mean that Great Britain will give Egypt her own petrol surplus from her refineries at Suez. Trans jordan has made agreement with Shell and Socony-Vacuum to receive per month 2,000 barrels of 42 gallons each of petrol payable in dollars. The price is believed to be quite high. = (2) Cable from Cairo dated March 17th reads: THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS "The British Army has sold to the Egyptian War SERVICE^ Department material amounting to 3 1/2 million pounds sterling. The contract comes into operation May 1st. The goods will be delivered at Ismailia (Suez Canal zone). This arrangement enables the War Department to avoid using its existing warehouses. According to information obtained from the railway station its Cairo depots have not dispatched any goods recently. The above transaction provided the Egyptian army with 30 spitfires."
