1. - Scattered North Korean air activity, and casualties believed
low. In recent operations, five North Korean aircraft destroyed in air,
one probably destroyed and two damaged on ground. Total at least twelve
North Korean aircraft shot down. USAF F-80's covering Suwon destroyed
reported La-5, obsolescent Soviet-built radial-engine fighter developed
to meet German FW-190. F-82's based Itasuke scrambled to meet four-
teen unidentified aircraft headed general direction Itazuke but made no
interception. U.S. B-29 mission scored direct hit on runway intersection
Kimpo Airfield. B-26's attacked Heijo Airfield (near Pyongyang) with
parafrags, with good results. B-29 hit marshalling yards Uijongbu.
Pilots report Yak-15 aircraft sighted north of 38th parallel.
m. - Increased FEAF aerial effort expected to affect enemy morale.
B-29 mission planned against Wonsan Airfield, emphasis on destruction
enemy aircraft on field. Secondary targets airfields north of 38th parallel.
B-26 operations to support South Korean ground operations. Fighters to
provide cover for B-29's in support area, including Suwon Airfield.
4. U.S. Action: The Joint Chiefs of Staff at 1900 (EDT)/29 substantially
the following directive, consolidating, broadening, and supplementing pre-
vious instructions on South Korea and Formosa:
a. cares Employ naval and air forces to provide fullest support to South
Korean forces by attack on military targets so as to clear South Korea of
North Korean forces.
b. COURAGE Employment of army forces will be limited to essential com-
munications and other essential service units, except that use of army
forces are authorized to insure retention of a port and air base in the
general area Pusan. (See par. 3 d above.)
C. - Defend Formosa by naval and air action against invasion or
attack by Chinese Communists and insure that Formosa not be used as an
operational base against the Chinese mainland by the Chinese Nationalists.
d. - U.S. 7th Fleet is assigned to operational control of CINCFE
and CINCPAC and CINCPACFLT will support and reinforce CINCFE as
necessary and practicable.
e. - CINCFE is authorized to extend operations into North Korea
against purely military targets. Operations in North Korea are to stay
58 well clear33 of the frontiers of Manchuria and the Soviet Union.
