1. Weather:
Scattered low clouds over entire area, with visibility restricted
by haze in the early morning. Overcast at 12,000 feet in south Korea.
Scattered rain showers in th afternoon. Forecast: Scattered low clouds
with visibility restricted by haze in early morning and scattered showers
in the late afternoon. (SECRET)
2. Soviet participation:
The Senior Soviet Naval Advisor at Pyongyang, North Korea
Naval Headquarters is named Kapansu (Phonetic). He has 10 officers
and 19 enlisted men who have been instructing in navigation and engineer-
ing in six months courses. No Soviet officers have been seen aboard
North Korean naval vessels since 25 June. (FECOM) (SECRET)
150 Soviets have been reported at a light house Chongjin (41-46N,
129-49E). The Soviets laid 6 mines 5 km from the light house at 2 km
intervals. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. Operations:
ENEMY SITUATION
a. In the Chonan-Kongju area, enemy forces supported by tanks
pushed south on the Chonan-Kongju highway and forced the 34th RCT to
withdraw to new defensive positions north of the Kum River in the vicinity
of Kongju. To the northeast of Kongju between Chonui and Chochiwon
enemy forces engaged elements of the 21st U.S. RCT now astride the
highway six miles north of Chochiwon. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET)
b. In the Chongju-Umsong area enemy pressure on the ROK
units has resulted in a general planned withdrawal of the 1st Corps to
defensive positions along the Pogang River. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET)
