JOINT SITREP NO. 534
(Maps attached)
From 0700/11 Sep (EDT) to 0700/15 Sep (EDT)
From 2100/11 Sep (Korea) to 2100/15 Sep (Korea)
1. Weather:
The period 12-15 September began with non-operational weather with
heavy rain and low overcast. It began to clear the 12th, and by the morning
of the 13th had become clear and operational. On the 14th, it was generally
good and was operational throughout the day. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity, except in the central sector, continued to be characterized
by sporadic, generally brief probing attacks with enemy groups of platoon strength
and less engaged, and by scattered, generally brief, opposition to UN patrols by
enemy groups up to company size. In the central sector, southeast of KUMSONG,
there was no enemy contact reported on the first day of this period, but on the
second day action resumed over positions on Capitol Hill (eight miles southeast of
KUMSONG) and on Finger Ridge (two miles west of Capitol Hill). In the early
morning of 13 September, 2 enemy platoons stubbornly,resisted for 2 1/2 hours
and maintained their positions on Finger Ridge against a UN attack. On Capitol
Hill, an enemy battalion executed a 3 hour and 45 minute attack which was re-
pulsed. The following day, an undetermined number of enemy were forced to with-
draw from positions on Finger Ridge which was then occupied by UN elements, but
a later enemy counterattack in company strength forced UN withdrawal. An unde-
termined number of enemy were later forced again to withdraw from Finger Ridge
by UN elements. A very heavy enemy mort ar and artillery barrage (over 14,800
rounds in a 6 1/2 hour period) then forced UN element's to withdraw. Elsewhere
across the front, generally brief probing attacks were highlighted by one of 80
minutes duration by an enemy platoon against the 2nd ROK Division southwest of
KUMSONG, while generally brief patrol clashes were highlighted by one of 4 hours'
duration in the 1st Marine Division sector and another of 4 hours in the 3d ROK
Division sector. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the four days totalled 48, 591
rounds, of which 33, 133 rounds fell in the II ROK Corps sector and 11, 281 rounds
fell in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 9, 825, of
which 5, 903 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
